Exclusive – Win tickets to the TRON: Legacy premiere in Hollywood and London

Nokia and Disney have teamed up to celebrate the release of the upcoming movie – TRON: Legacy – which is out on the big screen in December. To mark this occasion, Nokia have a new collection of videos, apps, ringtones and images from Ovi Store. Oh, and let’s not forget tickets to the premiere in LA and London to be won, exclusively here on Nokia Conversations. Read on to find out more.

Many of you may already have noticed that your Nokia N8 came pre-loaded with a variety of HD trailers of the new movie. And you’ll see that the digital universe of TRON is perfectly suited to the features of the Nokia N8. The HD playback shows off the film’s ultra futuristic, visually-stunning effects. Pair that with the Dolby 5.1 surround sound and you can hear those light cycles whizzing past you, really immersing you in the action.

The Nokia N8 also makes its movie debut and has a small but very important role. We can’t tell you what that role is, which means you’ll just have to watch the movie to find out. After all, we can’t tell you everything here, can we?
To mark this partnership, Nokia is offering two lucky people the chance to win a pair tickets to the London and Hollywood premiere of TRON: Legacy. Making you one of the first to see it and the envy of all your friends.
The London premiere will take place on December 5th at The Empire in Leicester Square, followed by an after-party. And the premiere in Los Angeles will happen on December 11th at the El Capitan Theatre.
We must point out that we can’t provide any transportation or flights to either of these events. So if you win the tickets, you’ll need to find our own way there.

Treasure Hunt

Fancy winning? Well, pay attention, ‘cos here’s how. At the bottom of this post there’s an image, and we’ve hidden three more images, randomly, in some of our stories from the past week, all you need to do is find them. In the right order, these four images spell out a word that you need to piece together. Once you’ve found all four, email Conversations@Nokia.com with the completed word, along with the URL where each image came from. Don’t forget to tell us your preference of premiere, LA or London. The two winners will be the first ones to email the correct answer. Happy hunting and good luck.
For those not lucky enough to win the tickets, Nokia have provided a feast of unique and exclusive content that can be downloaded from Ovi Store. Start with some behind the scenes video content, followed by the TRON Challenge app, with integration into Ovi Maps for some localised geo-fun. Then wash all that down with some wallpapers or ringtones to Encom-ify your new Nokia N8.
For those unaware of Tron, here’s a recap. Tron is a film created in 1982 which featured extensive computer graphics and saw it’s main character Kevin Flynn, played by Jeff Bridges create an electronic world which he was able to step inside and interact with. TRON: Legacy is the same idea, but is set 20 years in the future. Jeff Bridges returns as the main character and so does his younger self, created entirely by CGI. Battles and light cycle races ensue in modern-day stunning graphics.
Plug yourself into the grid with some exclusive content from Ovi Store.

The first Tron clue - three more to find

World Exclusive Tron: Legacy Trailer

The code has been cracked and the Encom takeover has ended.
Your reward?
A brand new WORLD EXCLUSIVE Tron: Legacy trailer.

This is the first time it has been seen anywhere in the world – did you spot the awesome cameo?  ;)

If you haven’t seen the original film then you are in for a treat – Electric neon-city landscapes, iconic Light Cycles and the evil Encom all combine to give us a lesson in how 21st century special effects should look!
Enough talking, just watch the trailer, enjoy its awesomeness and remember this isn’t the only Tron: Legacy surprise we have for you…

The evolution of Snake

Rememember when a phone’s only tasks were to make a phone call, send a text and allow for the occasional game of Snake? Its been a while since a phone had only these features, they’re now packed with all sorts of tech to make enrich our lives. We’re taking a look back at the evolution of Snake, so join us for a bit of reminiscing.

The Snake has appeared in many different forms over the decades, but it’s first appearance took place in the mid 1970s and was called Blockade. It was the creation of Gremlin Industries, who specialised in coin-operated arcade machines. In 1984, they closed their doors, never to open again. But their game still lives on.
By 1997, it had found its way into people’s pockets, onto their Nokia phones and created the craze of mobile gaming among teenagers. The Nokia 6110 was Nokia’s first phone with Snake and they continued to manufacture new models with the game installed throughout the next decade.

Towards the end of the year 2000, Nokia released one of the most successful phones. The Nokia 3310 sold 126 million units. Could the fact it had a Snake hiding in its belly be a part of its success? This low-cost, compact design attracted people from all walks of life and it was here that Snake hit the big-time, in the form of Snake 2.
Snake has made several appearances over the past ten years. Transforming the monochrome look we all loved, bringing it to colour. A big step was allowing multiplayer action via Bluetooth or Infra-Red so you could beat your friends, and one of its most recent incarnation has been in 3D with a distinct techo-electronic feel to it.

Here’s a video of Snake Subsonic.

Nostalgia lovers may wish to retro-fy their current phones with this version of the original. Snake Free, from Ovi Store. But isn’t touch input on a Snake game cheating?
What’s been your favourite Snake game over the years? I’d like to see Snake make a comeback and be pre-installed on all Nokia phones. It should be part of everyone’s youth.

Introducing Nokia Connectivity Analyzer, a utility to diagnose network connections

Do you have hard times to understand why your WLAN connection is not working at home? Nokia Connectivity Analyzer provides three kinds of utilities to diagnose and analyze WLAN and Packet Data connections.

Connectivity Diagnostics Test - With a couple of clicks the application connects to a selected access point and performs a diagnostics test. In case of any problems with the connectivity, you are informed about it with troubleshooting tips.

Following features for more advanced users and developers:
Connection Observer - This graphical presentation of WLAN and packet data connectivity and events releated to it helps you to analyze WLAN networks and how roaming is performed e.g. when using VoIP. The gathered data can be stored into a .csv file for further analysis. More advanced users and application developers can also capture the IP traffic of the device into a pcap file.

Ping Utility - This utility helps you to perform ICMP-Echo ping tests to a given hostname or IP address. With this feature it is easy to test IP connection to a selected destination.

We're making this beta version availabe for you to try out.  Please share your thoughts, submit bugs or suggestions in the discussion forum, but please check the known issues before submitting a duplicate.

5 ways to protect your smartphone from hackers

You may have read a couple of weeks ago about a “zombie” virus, which infected over a million mobile phones in China. According to the Shanghai Daily, it sent out spam messages that were costing as much as $300,000 a day!

The virus was able to send infected phone owner’s SIM card information to hackers, who could then remotely control the phone. Once they got their hands on it, they’d send pay-per-click ads in text messages to contacts in the user’s address book. When the new user clicked on the infected link, their device also got the virus, so people infected all their friends just like “real” zombies.
Nasty, hey? And it’s just another example of how hackers are targeting the valuable data on your smartphone. There’s still no easy way to stop these “zombie” viruses, but there are a few things you can do to make it harder for hackers to do their dirty work.

Think twice about the unknown
Think twice before answering calls or text messages from unknown numbers. This is especially the case if you’ve received a call more than once. Often phishing scams are started via mobile phone calls or texts. One way of checking is to do an Internet search of the phone number that’s calling you, and see if anyone has reported it as linked to a scam.

Always log out
Whenever you’ve finished using a web service, make sure you log out. Otherwise you might inadvertently stay logged in indefinitely. On most computers, if you don’t log out of your email or bank, there is often a time out period, but that’s not always the case with mobile access. And if you lose your phone while logged in, you can imagine what might happen.

Be careful with apps
One way hackers exploit smartphones is by creating a good app with some extra code and extra permissions. Ideally, download your apps from reputable places like Ovi Store. But if you have to go elsewhere, beware of apps that ask for too many permissions. It’s not a good sign if a torch app asks for Internet and contacts permissions.

Keep it clean
If you’re not using apps, clean them out. Some apps can monitor and access various types of data on your phone, including your contact list. Plus, if your phone has a SIM card, set a PIN code for the card, so if your mobile phone is ever lost, nobody can use the card.

Be wary of Bluetooth
Be wary of Bluetooth. If you use a hands-free device to make mobile calls, ideally use a wired headset. Bluetooth devices can be compromised and your personal data can be accessed or corrupted. If you do use Bluetooth, protect the connection with a longer, more secure password instead of a short PIN.

These are just some tips to keep your phone from turning into a zombie. If you use any other ways to keep yourself virus free or if you’ve suffered at the hands of hackers, we’d loved to hear about it. After all, forewarned is forearmed.

How to tell if you’re in love with your Nokia N8

                It´s love

Being in love is one of life’s great pleasures. We’ve all been there. Having our heart skip a beat when we see the object of our affection. Feeling overwhelmingly content when we hold them close. But these emotions aren’t restricted to other human beings. More and more, we’ve seen people acting like this with their Nokia N8. They are smartphone lovers. And who knows, you might just be one of them. But don’t worry, you’re certainly not alone. A recent study by Pew found that 83% of 18-29 year olds can’t bear to go to sleep unless their phone is within arm’s reach.
But sleeping with your beloved isn’t the only trait that says you and your device have a very special relationship. Here are four more.

You can’t stop buying presents for your Nokia N8
You want only the best accessories for your Nokia N8. You already got a bundle of them when you bought it, but you find yourself constantly searching for more. Should you get wireless headphones so you can better enjoy your vast array of music, or a tripod so you can take even better pictures with the 12mp camera? The list of possibilities is endless and you want it all.

When you meet other people with a Nokia N8, it’s all you talk about
“Cool, you have a Nokia N8 too! I thought about getting silver, but in the end I couldn’t take my eyes off the orange. It was love at first sight. Have you played Asphalt 5 HD on it yet? Yeah, it rocks!” If this sounds like the sort of conversation you have when you meet a fellow N8 owner just accept it. You’re infatuated.

You’ve cut back on necessities to afford your monthly smartphone bill
Of course eating lunch is important, but if you make your own sandwiches rather than eat at the local deli, you can save big over a month. Less food means more money to spend doing what you love best; speaking, texting and surfing on your Nokia N8. Maybe you could bike to work instead of getting the bus. Or move to a cheaper house, or sell your stereo. Does this thinking sound familiar? Then love is in the air.

You feel intense panic when you’re apart
And we’re not talking about losing your Nokia N8, we’re talking about you realizing you’ve left it at home. You start sweating as your heart beats like a runaway train. “What if people try to call me?” you think. What if I get the chance to take a great photo or movie? What if I can’t find the nearest pub? What will my Twitter followers think? This obsessive attachment means only one thing. You’re all pumped up with passion.
If you’ve got any other habits that show you’re a Nokia N8 lover, don’t be shy. Why not celebrate your devotion by sharing your romance with the world.

Three top free games for Nokia N8

GLOBAL – There’s no better way of passing the time then getting out your phone and zapping some aliens, burning rubber on a race track or just rolling a marble round a maze trying not to lose the ball down a hole. That’s exactly what we’re talking about today in our three top free games for the Nokia N8.

As much as I love to get involved in work or hang out with my loved ones, sometimes I just love to kick back, put my feet up and zone out for a while. And I’ve been doing that a lot lately since I’ve found some new games on my Nokia N8. The three games I’ve been staring at intently for the past few days are Galaxy on Fire, Need For Speed Shift and Marble Maze Classic. All of which are free from Ovi Store.

Galaxy on Fire,   £Free

Brought to us by FISHLABS who’ve been around since 2004 and has been developing high-quality 3D titles for every relevant mobile game platform since.

You’re a pilot named Keith T. Maxwell (I wonder if the T stands for Tiberius? What do you think, Star Trek fans?) and you’re at the helm of a small fighter ship, where every challenge means shooting something down that gets in your way. Usually an ugly alien that’s shooting back at you, so it’s all justified. Cruising around space earning credits to buy that next bigger and better fighter ship packed with the latest lasers makes this game really fun, as you’ll find it difficult to reach every corner of the universe. I’ve currently racked up about 8 hours’ game time and own a shiny battle ship that’s unstoppable. What ship have you got?

Need For Speed Shift, £Free

Electronic Arts are the guys responsible for this game as well as a whole heap more such as The Sims, Medal of Honor and FIFA on a wide variety of platforms including games consoles.

There’s one simple task in this game and that’s to be faster than all the other drivers. You can play in two modes; Quick Race and Career. Quick Race lets you just pick up your phone and take your car for a spin around a track while Career takes you on a journey across the world, conquering each continent, beating all the different car models. The further you progress on your career, the more money you’ll earn, leaving you with lots of spare cash to buy upgrades for your engine, a new spoiler or even a new car. You’ve got a choice of where you play the game from with Need For Speed Shift, either in the driver’s seat looking out from the windscreen or floating above the car which is where I usually drive from.

Marble Maze Classic, £Free – With ads

Marble Maze Classic is a digital version of those toys you used to pull out of a Christmas cracker when you were a kid. Hyperkani makes all sorts of classic games, mostly built for the Symbian platform.
The idea of Marble Maze Classic is to get a ball around a maze without losing it through an inconveniently placed hole. There aren’t many obstacles to avoid, just the holes and the walls, but some levels contain more holes than a block of swiss cheese and dodging them can be tricky. The Steel Ball is probably the easiest to roll around, but the Rubber Ball and Super ping pong Ball are more difficult to control as they’e got more bounce. Once you’ve mastered all 180 levels of the maze with all three ball types, you should try to make your own maze with the Custom Field option in the menu adding as many holes or walls as you like. Actually, the second image above is my custom made maze.
All these games are controlled by tilting the phone from left to right, or back to front, which makes a really interesting way of playing which you’ll soon get the hang of. You may get some strange looks if you play them on public transport, though.

Your Nokia Can Train Your Brain with Brain Challenge 3

hole.We are entering a wonderful, and wonderfully distracting, time of year. A perfect time to re-train your brain to focus. With Brain Challenge 3 – Think Again! from worldwide game publisher Gameloft SA you can train your brain any time you have a few minutes.
Brain Challenge 3 – Think Again! is available for $2.99 (USD) in Ovi Store and is compatible with Nokia Symbian devices. I train with the English version on my Nokia N97.  It is available in other languages, but the language depends on which version you install so I am not entirely sure which ones are available. Ovi Store should present you with a localized version based on your profile.
Like any good training program, Brain Challenge 3 starts by establishing a baseline profile. How well (or not) does your brain work now? Take the test to find out.

First, see how well your brain works before training.

As you enter the training game, you are presented the typical option of turning sound on or off, which presents a challenge

You can turn sound off, but there's a catch.

… when you are presented with the first challenge to LISTEN to the musicians.

If you turned off sound, listening to the musicians presents a challenge.

The first time I encountered this dilemma I tried to go back to the options menu to turn sound back on. I need not have worried; once you get into the music party test all you’re really doing is repeating the order in which the musicians play, and you can see the order even with sound off.

Even with sound off, you can see and repeat the order in which the musicians play.

The set of challenges continues, including one designed to improve focus (you need to see and remember which frogs eat which coloured insects) and my favourite, a rotating maze that you manipulate to drop a ball into a hole.

Which frog ate which insect?

Rotate the maze to drop the ball in the hole.

Train and play often, and see how fast your performance improves.

Brain Challenge 3 tracks your progress as you train your brain while playing this fun game. The skills you develop may come in handy during the coming holidays. For instance, your new talent for tracking feeding frogs just might come in handy at the next holiday buffet … hey, you never know!

The fabulous five! 5 must have apps for your Nokia N8

                                                                                                        | 5 |

So now you’ve got hold of your brand new shiny Nokia N8, you’re probably wondering which of the many great apps you should download. The Ovi Store has an ever-increasing range of options to choose from, but what about the essentials? It’s virtually impossible to come up with a definitive list, but after much debate, here are 5 apps we think every proud Nokia N8 user should get their hands on.

Spotify
Spotify has had us in musical raptures for some time now. This ‘universal jukebox’ gives you access to a huge library of music, which will have you foot tapping every second of the day.

Spotify streams over both Wi-Fi and 3G, giving you access to practically any song ever made, no matter where you are. Even better is its ability to store your playlists so you can listen to them while completely offline. Now that really is music to our ears.

Gravity
Okay, we admit it. We’re addicted to Twitter. If you love the idea of keeping up to date with all your buddies, too, you need Gravity. Recently voted by Ovi Users as their favourite app, Gravity is a fully-featured Twitter client with a fantastic user interface. It supports multiple Twitter accounts, integrates with Foursquare and Facebook and has a Google Reader included. This is one app that really does put the social into your life.

Nokia Panorama
Boasting isn’t our style, but what the heck, we’re going to say it anyway. The Nokia N8 is the world’s best cameraphone and Nokia Panorama transforms it into the world’s best panoramic cameraphone. This cool app tells you how to align your pics when you’re scanning the horizon and automatically takes the photos for you once they’re perfectly aligned with the previous ones. Capturing glorious landscapes has never been easier.

Opera Mobile
To get the very best out of mobile Web 2.0, you really should give Opera Mobile a go. With more than 70 million users worldwide, and 500 million page views per day, it’s easy to see why Opera Mobile is so popular. Simple-to-use, it comes with a range of cool time-saving features such as tabbed browsing, speed dial, and a password manager. And thanks to its famed server-side compression technology, you’ll be surfing at blistering speed.

Angry Birds
There are more and more fantastic games for the Nokia N8 coming out all the time. One that we love and think you will too is Angry Birds. What makes this game so outrageously addictive? Cute graphics, super easy controls, and the ‘one-more-go’ feeling. With hours of gameplay, challenging physics-based castle demolition, and lots of replay value, it’s no wonder that millions of people worldwide have flocked to this game. Who said revenge couldn’t be fun.
There you have it. Five fabulous apps that help you enjoy music, networking, surfing, photography and gaming. Can you think of any others that should be challenging for a place? If so, let us know what else makes you appy happy

5 reasons why the Nokia N8 could be the world’s greenest smartphone

When it comes to buying a smartphone, there are a thousand and one different things to look for. But how many people do you think consider a device’s environmental credentials before they part with their hard earned cash? Ten percent, twenty percent? Well, according to research this year by operator Q2, it’s a massive 44% and the number is growing every year. If you’re one of these people who want a smartphone that won’t cost the earth, you’ll be pleased to hear why we think the Nokia N8 could be the world’s greenest smartphone.

It’s made by the world’s greenest electronics company
When Greenpeace says you’re the world’s greenest electronics company, you know you’re on the right track. For the second year running, Nokia has taken the title, scoring highly when it comes to everything from recycling and eliminating toxic materials to planning for a device’s end. The company with the most eco looking logo, came ninth.

It’s incredibly energy efficiency
It’s amazing how much energy we waste. If the one billion people who use Nokia devices unplugged their charger when the battery was full, we’d save enough energy to power 100 000 European homes! Fortunately, the Nokia N8 comes with an unplug charger reminder to help you do just that. It also has a power saver mode, comes with the Fast Charger AC-15 (which has extremely low no-load energy consumption), and has an OLED display ambient light sensor.

It’s manufactured with greener materials
Scientists estimate that plastic could take anything from 500 to 1000 years to biodegrade. Studies also suggest that between 7% and 8% of the world’s fossil fuels are used in producing new plastics. Two great reasons to celebrate the fact the Nokia N8 uses bio plastic made of fermented corn sugar. What’s more, the Nokia N8 is totally free of PVC, BFR and RFR.

Its packaging is 100% recyclable
It might not seem like a big deal, but packaging accounts for a huge amount of waste. In the consumption capital of the world, the USA,  it’s more than 50% of household rubbish. With packaging that’s 100 % recyclable, hopefully, packaging for the Nokia N8 won’t join this mountain.

Its parts are 100% recyclable and recoverable
The huge growth in smartphones has led to a huge growth in digital waste. In the US alone, 100 million mobile phones are thrown out every year, of which currently only around 18% are recycled. The Nokia N8 is made from materials that are 100% recyclable or recoverable for energy, which is not just good for the planet but good for your bank balance.
There you have it. Five very good reasons why we think the Nokia N8 could be the world’s greenest smartphone. If this proves to be the case, it wouldn’t be the first Nseries to fly the eco flag. (In 2008, Greenpeace named the N95 the world’s second greenest phone) But it would be the first greenest smartphone that can be bought in the colour green too!

Nokia N8 Game A Day: Ovi suggests WarChess 3D

Unfortunately this will be the last Nokia N8 Game A Day post. The good news is we saved one of the best for last: WarChess 3D from IG FUN! If you’re a fledgling chess player or a grand master this game offers everything you need from a chess game.
WarChess 3D has five difficulty levels, offering a good competitive game no matter your skill level. Those that understand the basic rules and have played before will likely find 3+ challenging. For the experts out there let me know if you can beat level 5; I know a thing or two about chess but didn’t stand a chance against the games very powerful AI.

WarChess 3D adds variety to the game through five different themed boards; ranging from your classic chessboard to a fully 3D Animal Kingdom board complete with animal pieces and a natural forest background. The battle scenes that occur when you take an opponent’s piece are fun to watch and make this game perfect for young chess players just learning the game. (I especially like the Elephant, it perfectly suits what I think of the Rook.)

All the features you expect from a chess game are included such as being able to undo your latest move, track the pieces lost on both sides, and see each move made during the game using the grid system (another great way to teach new chess players the game).
WarChess 3D is available now on the Store for the Nokia N8. This great chess title is only $.99; so make sure you get it now while this great offer is still available. Note: the game is 17MB so it’s recommended to download using WiFi.

Ovi wants to boost your productivity with these apps for your Nokia

This has been a busy week. A lot of news, a lot of work, a lot of keeping up to do! For starters, as you might have seen yesterday, Nokia announced that downloads from Store now top 3 million per day, which is a wonderful milestone. At the same time, it was noted that 92 developers have had their apps and content in Store downloaded more than 1 million times, each! Like I said, there’s a lot going on!
How do you keep up? How do you ensure that your personal productivity remains high throughout the work week. Are there apps that you use to help get your through the day? What apps do you rely on the most? We’d love to hear about your personal must-have app choices.
And while you’re thinking about it, we’d like to share with you a few of the apps that have recently been reviewed over at the Ovi Daily App that are sure to be productivity enhancers, one and all.

Let’s start with SmartSilent, which is a clever app that can do the talking for you, even when you can’t take an incoming call. This app, from JPH-Soft, can send a fully customizable automated SMS to anybody who calls you when your phone’s profile is set to ‘silent’ – makes sense, right? Set up is a snap – it only take a minute or two – and then you can let the app do the work for you. SmartSilent is available in Store for $2.99 (USD), and it works on a broad range of Nokia S60 3.X and 5.0 devices.

Next up – and in a similar line of thought – we have CDA, which stands for “call drop alert”. So, unlike SmartSilent which works best when all is quiet, CDA is ready to help out when you can’t hear what is happening on the other end of the line because you’ve been disconnected! It happens to all of us at one time or another: you’re talking on the phone, thinking that the person on the other end can hear you, but really you’ve been cut off, and you’re essentially talking to yourself. Well, no more! With CDA installed (and running silently in the background), you will know immediately when a call has ended – whether by your own doing, or because the connection was lost.

The app beeps at you loudly, and then displays a big red warning icon. Happily, CDA from Brazil’s i2 tecnologia, also has one-button access to redial the last call made or received, so you can get right back on the line. CDA is free to download from Store, and works on Nokia Symbian OS, S60 5.0 devices like the Nokia N97 mini.

Third, let’s take a quick look at another app that you can set up once and then leave to do its thing with minimal supervision from you. I’m talking about Rseven, which is an app that you can use to easily back-up all of the data stored on your Nokia Symbian OS, S60 5.0 (touch-enabled) devices. The basic service is free to use (there is a premium version, too), and you can schedule automatic back-ups, which makes it hassle free, too. This short video demo shows what it is all about:

Rseven is free to download from Store.

Well, it would be easy to go on about apps that improve your productivity and make your day easier – I’ve just started to scratch the surface here. I’m already thinking about apps like Ohile Wire for reading RSS feeds, and Mobile Documents to easily view e-mail attachments.
So now it is your turn. Use the Comments section below and tell us about the apps you use the most. Or, if there is an app that you’ve been keen to try, but haven’t had a chance, let us know. We’ll check it out and report our findings back to you. Let’s go download some apps
